Denial

I have been in denial about the probable AI revolution. I’ve been in denial because I’m happy with the current world. I’m happy with my little family. I’m happy with my extremely fortunate wage. I’m happy with my status in society. I’m happy with society - I like the relative peace and the understandable set of rules I’ve grown up with, and it’s what I want more than almost anything for my children to grow up with.

I don’t want change. I’m scared.

I’m in a metaphorical house in the path of a hurricane refusing to evacuate because I like my house. But the storm will come, either way. (Or maybe it won’t. The weather forecast is sometimes wrong, right?).

But where would I even evacuate to? I like what I do - I play with computers and try to get as good at things as my human brain will let me.

Most revolutions are scary, but work out great for everyone. The internet was pretty scary, but we still have bookshops. TV was pretty scary, but we still have books. The record player was scary and autotune was scary, but we still have orchestras, and musicians. Of course, it’s hard not to worry that AI is such a dominant revolution that nothing human-based could have value any more, but I truly doubt that. As long as humans like humans, we’ll appreciate human creation.
